Sailing Plans 2026 – Mid April to Mid July

Sail From Preveza through the Corinth Canal
Explore the Peloponnese, The Saronic Gulf, The Cyclades Islands, Crete, Malta — and Finish in Tunisia

This voyage is a perfect blend of relaxed day sailing, exhilarating overnight passages, and unforgettable Mediterranean beauty, all aboard the capable and comfortable Oyster 56 — built for serious sailing and long-distance cruising. Every leg combines hands-on sailing, scenic exploration, and opportunities to experience local culture.

We begin in Preveza, easing into life on board with gentle Ionian sailing. Short day sails (10–25 nm) take us to islands like Meganisi, Kalamos, and Kastos, where turquoise waters, quiet anchorages, and sandy beaches invite swimming and snorkeling.
Evenings are spent wandering village streets or enjoying fresh seafood at seaside tavernas. After a few days, we turn east toward the Corinth Canal. Sliding through this narrow rock-cut passage, flanked by sheer cliffs, is a true sailor’s moment and the gateway to the Aegean Sea.

Along the Peloponnese coast, we mix scenic day sails with longer coastal runs (20–50 nm). Harbours like Nafpaktos, Galaxidi, and Pylos offer a perfect blend of culture and comfort — stroll historic streets, explore Venetian fortresses, or swim in calm bays.

The Saronic Gulf is a sailor’s playground, offering short day sails (10–30 nm) between islands like Poros, Hydra, Aegina, and Spetses. Evenings invite strolling cobbled streets, enjoying quayside cafés, or simply watching the sunset from the cockpit.

From here, we enter the Cyclades, where longer open-water legs (30–60 nm) take us to islands such as Kythnos, Paros, Naxos, and Santorini, with whitewashed villages, dramatic cliffs, and volcanic beaches. Days alternate between lively villages, swimming in hidden coves, and thrilling open-water sailing.

Next comes the overnight passage to Crete (70–90 nm), with watch systems, star-filled skies, and sunrise landfalls. Stops may include Chania, with its Venetian harbour; Rethymno, blending history and beaches; or Loutro, a quiet village accessible only by boat.

From Crete, we cross to Malta (525 nm), 3–4 days of classic passagemaking. Arrival in Valletta rewards with historic streets and crystal-clear waters, while Mdina, the Blue Grotto, and Gozo add to the adventure.

The final chapter takes us south to Tunisia, about 175 nm, with possible stops at Monastir or Sidi Bou Said, where North African colours, flavours, and culture provide a fitting finish to a journey spanning seas, histories, and continents.

This is proper sailing — a journey of miles, skills, and adventure — balanced with comfort, beauty, and unforgettable destinations. It is a route designed for sailors who want more than just a holiday: they want the experience of a lifetime.

Tunisia to Spain
As the summer months fade, the second half of the season is still wide open, full of options and possibilities. Osprey has carried us safely through the Mediterranean, and now the choices ahead will shape the final cruising weeks before the Atlantic crossing.

One option is to linger around Malta, enjoying familiar anchorages and exploring quieter bays, perhaps taking in a few extra days of swimming, walking, or relaxed day sails. From there, a detour north toward the Scilly Isles could offer longer passages, deep-water sailing, and a taste of offshore conditions without leaving the Mediterranean entirely.

Alternatively, we could head back toward the western Mediterranean, revisiting Sardinia, Corsica, and Minorca. These islands are perfect for combining scenic day sails, overnight passages, and quiet anchorages along the way. In Sardinia, the southern bays are ideal for calm days and swimming; Corsica offers sheltered anchorages and dramatic cliffs, while Minorca provides secure harbours and anchorages like Cala Macarella and Cala Galdana — perfect stopping points to break up longer passages before heading back to Spain.

Whichever route we choose, the schedule is defined by one key factor: we must arrive in Almerimar by mid-October to refit the yacht for the Atlantic crossing. This shapes every decision — how long to linger in a favourite bay, how fast to push on during offshore passages, and which anchorages provide both safety and convenience for rest. The Oyster 56 will need careful inspection and preparation, with rigging, systems, and safety equipment all checked and upgraded in readiness for ocean sailing.

The remainder of the season is therefore a mix of exploration and measured planning. We can chase favourable winds, linger in beautiful anchorages, and enjoy relaxed day sails, but always with the Atlantic in mind. Whether we linger in Malta, enjoy the Scilly Isles, or take a scenic route through Sardinia and Corsica, the ultimate goal is clear: arrive in Almerimar on time, ready for the next great adventure across the Atlantic, having made the most of the Mediterranean along the way. Help us choose.
